What MIT says, and the one real exception
In the official MIT Admissions post "Applying Sideways," Chris Peterson tells the story of a student who built a fully functional nuclear reactor in his garage, and was not admitted. Over a thousand students were admitted that year, and none of them built a reactor.
The honest nuance the essay underplays: there are a few genuine golden tickets, but they are world-class. A medal at an international academic olympiad, math (IMO), physics, informatics, chemistry, biology, is signal MIT and peers read as close to decisive, precisely because it cannot be bought, padded, or faked. There are only a handful of medalists each year, worldwide.
So the real lesson holds: do well, be kind, and go deep. No one reaches an olympiad medal by collecting activities, they reach it by pursuing one thing further than nearly anyone. Depth is the path whether or not it ends in a medal.
Where most families get it wrong
Families try to buy or assemble a golden ticket, an expensive program, a founder title, a stunt like the reactor. But manufactured credentials don't convert; only genuine, top-of-the-world achievement does, and that only comes from real, sustained depth. The reactor read as a stunt disconnected from a coherent person; the same effort, tied to a genuine pursuit, would have told a different story.
- Stop asking "what activity will get my child in?"
- Start asking "what does my child love enough to go further than anyone?"
- You can't fake your way to a real golden ticket, you can only build toward one.
- Depth is the strategy whether or not it ends in a top award.
